Professor Michael Harrison

Professor Michael Harrison is the Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at South East Technological University. His research, undertaken in conjunction with collaborators in University Hospital Waterford and UPMC Whitfield, considers the impact of exercise for clinical populations, including age-related frailty and prostate cancer. He has a specific interest in immune cell ageing and possible effects of these cells on vascular disease.

Professor Harrison has been part of different national working groups and local initiatives to establish community-based exercise services for individuals with chronic health conditions. He was the Principal Investigator on a recently completed project to establish a National Framework for exercise professionals who work with people with long term conditions.

He is currently the Chair of the group developing the extension of the national physical activity guidelines for chronic conditions, pregnancy and postpartum. He is a former Chair of the Register of Exercise Professionals in Ireland.  Professor Harrison holds a Fellowship from the American College of Sports Medicine.
